Tektite Zenon Strobe: 200 vs. 300

Sometimes, less is more.  Especially when a company develops a

product, finds problems, and decides to gamble its reputation by rolling out the product anyway.

I shopped for a strobe and saw the Tektite Xenon 200 Strobe.  I realized that there was a newer model, the Tektite 300.  The 200 has 2 batteries, while the 300 has 3  batteries.  The 200 is cheaper than the 300.  So based on the 300 being newer, heavier, and pricier, I ASSUMED that the 300 was the better light.  So I ordered it.

Backplate or BC Jacket? Tech vs. Rec

Once I figured I was serious about SCUBA, I had to make some fundamental decisions in shopping for gear.  One of the big issues is how you will control your buoyancy underwater.

Modern SCUBA divers adjust their buoyancy like submarines.  To increase buoyancy, they press a button to inflate a bladder with air from the air tank.  To sink, they press another button to vent the air out, and let their lead weights take them down (dive! dive!).  The device they use for this is called a buoyancy compensator.

White’s Drysuits Are Invading Dutch Springs!

hancockIt was beautiful weather at Dutch Springs last weekend. The sun rolled into a slow broil by Sunday, to 92 degrees.  Meanwhile, the drysuiters are groaningly donning their winter underwear to go for a SCUBA dive in the moderately-cold 43 degree quarry.

Walking around the grassy 50-acre facility, I noticed a difference from last year: the presence of White’s Drysuits lying on the grass.  Over the weekend I realized the extent of the sea change: White’s drysuits actually OUTNUMBERED the DUI drysuits at Dutch Springs for the first time.

Diving the Subway Cars

My brother and I are on the six pack with Atlantic Edge Scuba to dive the subway cars in May off Ocean City Maryland.

Anybody out there have experience diving these subway cars, or the other subway reefs in the reef projects in Jersey, the Carolinas and elsewhere?

The Undersea Hotel

I heard about this hotel in Key Largo that can only be accessed by SCUBA. Maybe someday…

Hey, this is not a petting zoo!

Well, a lot can be said about this video, which is soberly prescriptive, but also pretty ridiculous. A Scuba diver decides to feed a moray eel, and the eel, instead of hiding, gets into the playful spirit of things. But hey, maybe it’s not such a good idea to play with an animal that has steak knives for teeth!

Do You See Why These Scuba Divers Are Drowning?

What went wrong on these dives?

I stumbled across this rather chilling 30-second video of a Scuba diver losing her regulator, then frantically grabbing for the camera operator’s regulator, and then finally bolting for the surface where I assume she lived without drowning or getting decompression sickness.  Video of this common type of accident is extremely rare.

What’s interesting is that this video shares a few eery similarities with another video I posted a while ago which is also shown below.  Backseat divers, please analyze and comment.

Should You Spend Your Next Trip Diving or Taking a Class?

After I got a C-Card, I was advised to just dive, dive, dive.  My instructor told me that the best training is to log as many dives as I could, so that I could build my buoyancy skills on my own, as well as get familiar with my own rig. It turns out that an article in this month’s issue of Dive Training (March 2009) suggests to take the opposite approach.

Review - Dive Alert by Ideations Design

As a new SCUBA diver, I read Diver Down and learned about all the harrowing experiences divers have had when they did not carry one of these Dive Alert air horns.
